    In 1931, the SS Viking exploded during the filming of 'The Viking,' resulting in 27 fatalities, including director Varick Frissell. The explosion was attributed to mishandled explosives used for ice breaking. Despite the tragedy, the film was released the next summer, renamed in honor of the ship, featuring a prologue by Sir Wilfred Grenfell.
