    An inquest into the death of 64-year-old fisherman Joachim McNulty revealed he drowned after his car slipped into the algae-covered Belderrig Pier on February 19, 2026. A passer-by attempted a rescue, but emergency services could not recover the vehicle until the tide receded. The coroner confirmed the cause of death as asphyxia due to drowning, pending a gardaí investigation.
