    Deadly squirrelpox confirmed in Scottish red squirrels

    A case of squirrelpox has been confirmed in red squirrels in Clackmannanshire, marking only the second detection of the virus north of the central belt. The virus, lethal to red squirrels but harmless to grey squirrels, has prompted conservation groups to ask locals to remove wildlife feeders to limit its spread. The population of red squirrels in Scotland is under threat, with only about 220,000 remaining.
